Study Skills

Preparing for exams like the A-Levels is a pretty big task. Most of us can remember fairly well what somebody told us ten minutes ago, or something we read yesterday, but over time the information naturally fades in our memories. Revision is about keeping the information fresh and making sure it sticks somewhere in our brain where we can access it easily on exam day. The study skills listed in this section of the Nicourses.com site can help aid your revision and hopefully lead to exam success.

Different students take in and retain information in different ways. Studying is most definitely a case of different strokes for different folks. There are some study basics, such as taking notes and memorising lists, which pretty much everybody has to concentrate on. There are other ways, however, in which students can make the most of their study time, and prepare as best as possible for their exams ahead.

This study skills section of the Nicourses.com site looks at a number of different ways in which you can take control of your studying and prepare cleverly for the exam situation. By managing your time, taking control of your study space, looking after yourself properly, and using active learning techniques you can get yourself in the best shape possible for the challenges to come.

As you learn these skills, be kind to yourself. It's sometimes not easy to unlearn old habits. So, don't rush out and try everything immediately. The techniques outlined in this section are relatively quick to pick up, so if you've fallen behind in your work, you still have the chance to apply these skills to a planned 'catch up and revise' schedule. As my granddad used to say, the longest journey begins with a single step. With a bit of patience and by working a little at a time, you'll be surprised at how quickly you can improve the quality of your studying.

You should always remember, during the whole process, that while doing well in your exams is very important, it is not the be all and end all. Sure it is a competitive system, and going to third level is crucial for many people and for many careers, but everyone involved (including students, teachers and parents) should keep their sense of perspective. Staying calm and taking things one step at a time is the key to realising your potential and achieving success in your exams. Hopefully, the study tips in this section will help make your dreams come true!

Good luck!
