postgrad or higher diploma for teaching in a special school

Postby speedy » Sun Jul 27, 2008 10:50 pm

I work full time with adults with disabilities teaching computers and Tutor and would eventually like to teach children in a special primary school. I have an honours degree in community studies. Is there a part time higher diploma or course which i could do so that I would be qualified to teach in a special primary school. I believe St. Nicholas offer a postgrad but it only qualifies one to teach children aged between birth and six years only and furthermore it is a full time course which is not an option for me.

Hi Speedy. If you want to become a Special Needs Teacher in a Special School, you would have to qualify as a Primary Teacher first and then do the Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Education. See www.spd.dcu.ie/main/academic/special_ed ... al_000.pdf. If you got C3 in higher Irish in your Leaving, a minimum of C3 in ordinary English and D3 in ordinary Maths, you could apply for the 18 month conversion course for Primary Teaching as you already have your honours degree. The conversion course can be done online with Hibernia College (www.hiberniacollege.net) which would suit you if you cannot go full-time. The only other way is to do the BA in Montessori Education with St.Nicholas Montessori College. That is recognised for teaching in the Special Primary Schools. It is available both full-time and part-time (www.snnmci.ie). The only problem with the part-time option is that it would take five years! Hope that helps. Miriam

I want to know if getting a major diploma in business administration would be good for my career or a single graduation degree would be enough. I am not doing any job but involved in this certification admin course. Can I get some advice on it?
