From a useless law degree to what??

Postby c.kearney1 » Thu Aug 06, 2009 12:06 am

I have a Corporate Law degree and am currently sitting the FE-1s but have finally realised or rather admitted to myself that law is not the road for me. Also, it's pretty obvious that the law world is pretty saturated with overly ambitious and naive graduates already. I chose law because i thought it would be challenging, I would be helping people, there is continuous learning, the remuneration, the title, I would meet different people and finally I would make a difference...naive anyone?!
I have taken a year out from law and somewhere along the way have realised that I would love, and would be equally good at teaching, preferably adults. This is, however, where my new wave of insight and perhaps courage ends as i have done nothing about it except wallow in the belief that I'm stuck and should continue on with law beacuse I have already spent 4 years at it and it would be a waste to just leave it all by the landfill.
If anyone could help me out with the next step I should take in trying to find a course that would put me on the right track I would be appreciative. I have a good base in that I got a high Leaving Cert result . I would be willing to go back to college full time if absolutley necessary although I have a stable full time job at the moment and it seems pretty silly to give that up in times like these.
Any advise is welcome.

Thanks!

I would advise you to get some professional career guidance before you decide. You can use a Law degree like a BA which can be a stepping stone into a range of careers apart from Law, such as Journalism/Media related careers, Business, Computers, Primary Teaching (if you have C3 in higher Irish, ordinary level English C3 and Maths C3), just to mention a few. It would really depend on which would interest you most and whether you would suit it or not.

I went to a guidance councellor recently but he more or less pushed towards primary which would not suit my temperament. I looked up doing a business Dip in Limerick but my Corporate Law Degree didn't have enough business subjects to allow me to do it. I received all Honours on the Leaving Cert totalling 545. My Degree isn't a BA. It's a Bachelor of Corporate Law.
Teaching adults would be ideal as my mother and friends went back to education after 40 years and I became their 1-1 teacher. I absolutely loved teaching people that wanted to learn and even though it was difficult I gained great satisfaction from it and all my "students" did quite well! I have registered with Age Action Ireland to help adults use the internet, text and e-mails to be fully satisfied that I'm making the right decision.
I wonder would I just have to go back and do Arts? It seems somewhat silly to go back and do something that vague when I already have a good 2:1 degree to my name.

Thanks for your reply,
Any other information is welcome!

I realise that your degree is not an "ordinary" BA but it can still be used as a stepping stone into a different career area by doing a relevant postgraduate course. Check with the City of Dublin VEC to see if you could teach any of the subjects in one of their colleges of Further Education. Also have a look at www.careersportal.ie". It is a very useful website.
