How do I become a secondary school teacher?

Postby mandymoo » Fri May 28, 2010 5:07 pm

Hi everyone,

I am a bit lost in my career at the moment and need to change career and would like to be a secondary school teacher.

I am from the North so don't have leaving cert Irish. I am willing to do that if anyone knows of anywhere I can do an intensive course please let me know!

After I have the Irish, where do I start? If I have a degree in English is this enough?

Also, where are the courses that incorporate teaching and specialist subjects like PE?

Is it easier to be a primary school teacher or secondary?

One last thing, I live in Dublin and my course would have to be part time!

Any help at all will be appreciated!

See www.teachingcouncil.ie. You would not need to have Irish unless you want to be a primary teacher or to teach in an all-Irish school or to teach Irish. A degree in English, provided it was approved by the Teaching Council would be sufficient but difficult enough to get a position with only one teaching subject. You would have to do the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) to qualify you as a post-primary teacher. It can be done part-time over two years in DCU but check out your degree with the TC first. If you cannot find the information you need, phone the Teaching Council and you can get all your questions answered there.
